Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare, IT and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.65% to hit a new 52-week high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Lithium Americas Corp (TSX:LAC), which rose 3.82% or 0.33 points to trade at 8.97 at the close. TFI International Inc (TSX:TFII) added 3.81% or 6.68 points to end at 181.97 and Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC) was up 3.74% or 0.37 points to 10.25 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners LP (TSX:BEP_u), which lost 2.00% or 0.71 points to trade at 34.78 in late trade. Canfor Corporation (TSX:CFP) declined 1.98% or 0.36 points to end at 17.79 and Altus Group Limited (TSX:AIF) shed 1.96% or 0.86 points to 42.91.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 597 to 416 and 93 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.28% to 10.09.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.91% or 18.80 to $2,088.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 2.25% or 1.70 to hit $73.87 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 1.81% or 1.46 to trade at $79.39 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.11% to 0.76, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.66% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.47% at 100.63.
