Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Energy, Consumer Staples and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.63%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Athabasca Oil Corp (TSX:ATH), which rose 7.17% or 0.21 points to trade at 3.14 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TSX:BTE) added 6.26% or 0.29 points to end at 4.92 and International Petroleum Corp (TSX:IPCO) was up 4.94% or 0.61 points to 12.97 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Lumine Group Inc (TSXV:LMN), which lost 6.87% or 1.15 points to trade at 15.60 in late trade. BELLUS Health Inc. (TSX:BLU) declined 4.27% or 0.44 points to end at 9.86 and MAG Silver Corp (TSX:MAG) shed 3.17% or 0.54 points to 16.49.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 576 to 413 and 88 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.71% to 17.14.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.28% or 25.70 to $1,976.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 5.41% or 3.75 to hit $73.01 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 4.37% or 3.26 to trade at $77.85 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.67% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.33% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.27% at 102.48.
