Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Healthcare, Energy and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.48%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB), which rose 7.41% or 0.49 points to trade at 7.10 at the close. Park Lawn Corp (TSX:PLC) added 5.33% or 1.20 points to end at 23.71 and Secure Energy Services Inc . (TSX:SES) was up 4.41% or 0.26 points to 6.15 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX:IVN), which lost 2.73% or 0.34 points to trade at 12.12 in late trade. NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX:NG) declined 2.10% or 0.11 points to end at 5.13 and Dye & Durham Ltd (TSX:DND) shed 1.61% or 0.29 points to 17.72.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 575 to 358 and 115 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.43% to 11.73.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.33% or 6.35 to $1,915.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.36% or 0.25 to hit $69.81 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.30% or 0.22 to trade at $74.46 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.07% to 0.75, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.49% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.47% at 103.03.
