Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare, IT and Energy sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.44%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canopy Growth Corp (TSX:WEED), which rose 17.31% or 0.58 points to trade at 3.93 at the close. Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP) added 12.28% or 5.43 points to end at 49.66 and Tilray Inc (TSX:TLRY) was up 11.40% or 0.52 points to 5.08 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM), which lost 7.41% or 1.62 points to trade at 20.25 in late trade. Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX:WDO) declined 6.31% or 0.61 points to end at 9.06 and Wheaton Precious Metals Corp (TSX:WPM) shed 4.91% or 2.15 points to 41.61.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 533 to 471 and 115 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.05% to 21.96.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 1.03% or 17.70 to $1,693.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.89% or 0.90 to hit $99.84 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.57% or 0.61 to trade at $106.74 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.08% to 0.78, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.43% to 0.76.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.38% at 106.96.
