Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Energy, Clean Technology and IT sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.28%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were TransAlta Renewables Inc. (TSX:RNW), which rose 18.47% or 2.03 points to trade at 13.02 at the close. Athabasca Oil Corp (TSX:ATH) added 9.27% or 0.28 points to end at 3.30 and Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) was up 7.86% or 0.44 points to 6.04 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Park Lawn Corp (TSX:PLC), which lost 2.80% or 0.71 points to trade at 24.67 in late trade. Gfl Environmental Inc (TSX:GFL) declined 2.64% or 1.34 points to end at 49.48 and Transcontinental Inc (TSX:TCLa) shed 2.37% or 0.32 points to 13.19.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 500 to 446 and 128 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.92% to 12.92.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.32% or 6.15 to $1,937.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 2.52% or 1.84 to hit $74.83 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 2.20% or 1.71 to trade at $79.40 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.36% to 0.76, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.34% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.29% at 101.35.
