Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Energy, IT and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.27%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX:BIR), which rose 3.27% or 0.26 points to trade at 8.22 at the close. Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers Inc . (TSX:RBA) added 3.25% or 2.38 points to end at 75.61 and Constellation Software Inc . (TSX:CSU) was up 3.19% or 84.36 points to 2,729.36 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Canada Goose Holdings Inc (TSX:GOOS), which lost 6.89% or 1.70 points to trade at 22.98 in late trade. Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) declined 4.10% or 0.25 points to end at 5.85 and Denison Mines Corp (TSX:DML) shed 4.03% or 0.06 points to 1.43.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 492 to 420 and 132 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 8.14% to 12.18.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.99% or 19.35 to $1,979.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.18% or 0.13 to hit $71.73 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.09% or 0.07 to trade at $75.79 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.01% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.36% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.38% at 103.06.
