Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Energy and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.22%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG), which rose 4.20% or 0.45 points to trade at 11.17 at the close. Brookfield Infrastructure Partners LP (TO:BIP_u) added 3.93% or 1.98 points to end at 52.38 and Cascades Inc . (TO:CAS) was up 3.52% or 0.41 points to 12.07 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD), which lost 2.94% or 0.04 points to trade at 1.32 in late trade. Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. (TO:TRQ) declined 2.66% or 0.100 points to end at 3.660 and Linamar Corporation (TO:LNR) shed 2.49% or 1.40 points to 54.75.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 526 to 521 and 116 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.21% to 13.03.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.37% or 4.60 to $1258.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.26% or 0.19 to hit $74.33 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.53% or 0.41 to trade at $78.17 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.05% to 0.7606, while CAD/EUR fell 0.05% to 0.6525.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.14% at 94.19.
