Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Consumer Staples, Clean Technology and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.04%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Alamos Gold Inc (TO:AGI), which rose 4.99% or 0.32 points to trade at 6.73 at the close. Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD) added 4.96% or 0.07 points to end at 1.48 and ECN Capital Corp (TO:ECN) was up 4.11% or 0.15 points to 3.80 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TO:IVN), which lost 4.57% or 0.160 points to trade at 3.340 in late trade. Teck Resources Ltd B (TO:TECKb) declined 4.10% or 1.50 points to end at 35.09 and Lundin Mining Corporation (TO:LUN) shed 4.07% or 0.360 points to 8.480.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 569 to 522 and 133 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.41% to 11.90 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.10% or 1.30 to $1293.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.65% or 0.47 to hit $71.73 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.14% or 0.11 to trade at $79.68 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.23% to 0.7783, while CAD/EUR rose 0.42% to 0.6651.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.43% at 93.91.
