In a bid to boost AI adoption, the Australian Government has announced the AI Adopt Program, dedicating A$17 million to establish centres aimed at accelerating the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) among small to medium enterprises (SMEs).

The program, which is now open for grant applications, seeks to bolster the integration of AI within the business sector, particularly focusing on enhancing competitiveness and productivity.

These AI Adopt Centres are designed to be beacons of AI innovation and knowledge, aiming to demonstrate the transformative potential of AI and provide specialised training and guidance to SMEs.

Each centre will showcase AI's innovative capabilities, offer responsible and efficient adoption strategies, and empower businesses with the skills needed to manage AI effectively.

Services free of charge

Eligible businesses, organisations, and research entities can apply for grants ranging from A$3 million to A$5 million.

Successful applicants are expected to provide services that align with one or more priority areas of the National Reconstruction Fund.

A critical aspect of this program is that the services offered by these centres will be accessible to SMEs free of charge, ensuring wide-reaching benefits across various sectors.

Part of the budget

This funding is part of the "Growing Australia’s Critical Technology Industries" measure, highlighted in the 2023-24 Budget.

The move underscores the government's commitment to integrating cutting-edge technologies like AI into the business landscape. It reflects a strategic approach to fostering long-term competitiveness and growth in the Australian economy, particularly in the tech sector.

Applications for the AI Adopt Program are open until 29 January 2024, marking a significant step towards a technologically advanced and AI-integrated business environment in Australia.
