© Reuters. Australia vs England: Women's World Cup semi-final ends in defeat for hosts

12:52pm: England reach the final!

Australia 1 - 3 England

A fairly relaxed semi-final for England, with the Lionesses' facing moments of pressure from the Australians, but never really looking in huge trouble.

The win sets up Sunday's final against Spain, who beat Sweden 2-1 yesterday.

Last time the two came head to head was in the quarter-finals of the Euros where England knocked out the Spanish in a 2-1 win before going on to win the tournament.

12:44pm: Goal - Russo scores!

A wonderful pass by Hemp slots the ball straight through Australia's defence and finds Alessia Russo who, just onside, slots it into the corner.

Australia 1 - 3 England and with less than two minutes left, it seems England is heading to another final.

12:41pm: Chances for the Tillies

Great opportunities are coming and going for the hosts and with five minutes left, the Australians will be hoping Sam Kerr can get her foot on it.

12:39pm: Aus going for it

Australia brings on attacker Van Egmond in replacement for centre-back Polkinghorne - a clear sign the Tillies are going to throw everything at these next nine minutes.

But what a great, what could be winning, goal from Hemp!

12:35pm: Fifteen minutes remain

With only fifteen remaining can the hosts find an equaliser?

Raso, who looked one of the brightest, has been taken off and replaced by Sydney's Cortnee Vine.

12:34pm: Kerr-ching!

Let's look at that wondergoal one more time.

12:28pm: Goal! Hemp scores

The Lionesses have woken up and after a period of strong attacks, Lucy Hemp finds the net.

Finding her way out of trouble with multiple Aus defenders around her in the box, the City striker is able to fire a shot into the bottom and Arnold can't do anything but watch it hit the net.

12:26pm: Lucy Bronze chance!

Almost scoring from the byline, Bronze whips it across and over the keepers head before its slips past the back post and out for a goal kick.

12:25pm: Australia 1 - 1 England

Momentum has shifted as Sam Kerr jostles past a few defenders to get another shot on goal, but is deflected out for a corner.

England's men's team will surely be on the edge of there seat back home!

12:21pm: Goal: Sam Kerr!

What a hit! The Tillie's captain sticks it top left from about 24 yards out.

She had the option to play it out left but, with the ability to score goals like that there's no wonder she went alone.

12:16pm: England half chance as momentum slows

Lauren Hemp took a half-shot on the edge of the box, which caused the Australia goalkeeper, Arnorld, to react quickly.

A nicely whipped-in corner reaches the back post by Millie Brown but can't hit the target.

58 minutes in and play has slowed, just slightly, with both teams struggling to break through the defences - although England will be happy with it staying like this.

12:13pm: Football fever worldwide

It's not just fans in the late Australasian evening cheering on the players. Back home in England, thousands have headed to fan zones, including Boxpark in Wembley, to find out who will play Spain on Sunday.

12:10pm: Danger down the right for Aus

All of Australia's attacks appear to be coming from down the right, largely driven by the Real Madrid winger.

Floated balls have been reaching Fowler and Foord on the left, but so far neither have been able to produce a real chance from them.

12:04pm: Second half underway

The second half here at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney is underway and Raso is yet again looking dangerous from the off.

A few early crosses don't come to anything, just making sure the England-back three is focused and ready for the next 45.

11:54am Women football ready to boom

Bringing yet again more intrigue to the women's sport, the World Cup comes ahead of the hotly anticipated WSL takeover next year.

Inspiring new viewers, the sport is at an inflexion point and analysts at Norton Rose Fullbright reckon the tournament could lead to big changes for domestic clubs.

"WSL clubs generated £32m in aggregate revenue in the 2021/22 season, which was a significant 60 per cent (£20m) higher than the previous season. This trend looks set to only increase further, as the women’s game is seeing tangible benefits from this growth in popularity," the law firm said.

England had more than 65% possession in the first half, registering 7 shots and 2 on target, compared to Australia's four shots with one on target.

11:49am: Half Time - Australia 1 - 0 England

The first half comes to a close after only a minute of added time, a surprise compared to some of the lengthier stoppage times viewers have become accustomed to during the tournament.

Ella Toone's rocket is the only thing separating the two sides at the moment, Australia's Raso is causing the Euro champions the biggest issues.

11:46am: Sydney quietens

Toone's first goal of the tournament has created a slightly more subdued feel around the Olympic Stadium in Sydney.

Around 75,00 are believed to be in attendance, and from the sea of yellow, it wouldn't be wrong to assume most are in favour of the home team.

11:40:am Goal! Ella Toone

A great shot burying straight into the top corner from the edge of the box, assisted by Russo.

Questions may be asked by the Australians of why she was allowed so much space, but don't let that take away from what was a cracking strike.

England lead 1-0.

11:34am: Raso causing problems

Real Madrid's Raso comes close to scoring the opener for Australia after a corner reaches her at the back post, however, she just slots the shot wide.

Looking like the one to bring some creativity to the host's attack, the winger has looked dangerous driving the ball into the final third.

Australia is starting to have a few more chances but England still looks dangerous with over-the-top through balls.

11:30am: Sam Kerr threatening

Jess Carter avoids a booking for a cheeky high foot against Sam Kerr, the Australia captain has started positively in the opening 30 minutes and is clearly England's biggest threat.

11:22am: Lionesses' probing as Australia stand firm

A strong link-up play between Ella Toone and Alessia Russo ends up with a shot ricocheting against the side netting, and some various dangerous attacks from England in the final third are currently being offset by an intense press from Tillies.

Left-sided centreback Greenwood has picked up an early yellow-card.

11:15am: England starting strong

A packed-out stadium is really adding to the atmosphere, with the match beginning to open up. Its looking like the Lionesses are starting to get a firmer grip on the game.

11:12am: Early chances for both sides

A one-on-one chance for Sam Kerr looked almost easier to score than it did miss, but Mary Earps remained strong and closed down the opening shot.

A few minutes later and a pass from Greenwood to Stanway provides England with their first chance of the match.

Both teams looking strong early, as England continue to float balls into the box.

11:06am: A chance for glory

Garnering some of the largest viewership figures in women's football, England's quarter-final against Colombia brought in more than 7 million viewers according to Sports Pro Media.

Total viewership is expected to reach 2 billion for the whole tournament, making it one of the most watched women's sporting events ever.

11:00am: Kick-off, England get the semi-final underway

Australia's battle to reach their first women's world cup final has begun, with the Lionesses looking to take bring the game to the hosts early in match.
