Investing.com – Australia equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Gold, IT and Metals & Mining sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 added 0.38%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Janus Henderson Group PLC (AX:JHG), which rose 5.81% or 2.505 points to trade at 45.585 at the close. Evolution Mining Ltd (AX:EVN) added 4.84% or 0.105 points to end at 2.275 and Costa Group Holdings Ltd (AX:CGC) was up 4.53% or 0.215 points to 4.965 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Mayne Pharma Group Ltd (AX:MYX), which lost 7.76% or 0.063 points to trade at 0.743 in late trade. Skycity Entertainment Group Ltd (AX:SKC) declined 3.69% or 0.140 points to end at 3.650 and Sirtex Medical Ltd (AX:SRX) shed 3.68% or 0.600 points to 15.720.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 575 to 538 and 368 ended unchanged on the Sydney Stock Exchange.
The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 3.70% to 13.687.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.65% or 8.19 to $1270.79 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.33% or 0.16 to hit $49.01 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.44% or 0.23 to trade at $51.91 a barrel.
AUD/USD was down 0.35% to 0.7885, while AUD/JPY fell 0.68% to 86.73.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.03% at 93.51.
