(Updates to close) Australian shares ended lower on Tuesday as losses in financials eclipsed gains in the material sector in a session marked by a general rise in global risk aversion.

Gold miners Newcrest Mining Ltd NCM.AX , Northern Star Resources Ltd NST.AX and Evolution Mining Ltd EVN.AX gained 3.5 percent to 4.9 percent.
