The Australian Football League (AFL) and Be., a subsidiary of Animoca Brands Corporation Ltd, have teamed up to launch the Throwbacks series of AFL Mint.

The series is now available, with packs starting from A$29 at AFL Mint.

AFL Mint is a collaboration between Be. and AFL, offering fans and collectors the opportunity to collect AFL Moments as non-fungible tokens (NFTs). These feature iconic moments, highlights, and players of AFL.

“We are thrilled to be announcing this latest themed drop for AFL Mint,” AFL head of commercial operations David Elliott said.

“Off the back of a successful season including the Geelong club collaboration, the launch of the marketplace and consistent Mint Moments sell-outs, we think this one will provide all fans the ability to collect and own parts of our game’s history in the digital world.”

Revisiting AFL's golden era

The Throwbacks series includes moments from legendary players of past decades. It will initially release 16 iconic AFL moments and 16 superstars from the 1990s.

This includes a mix of eight common, five deluxe, and three ovation tiered moments, with stars like Billy Brownless, Nicky Winma, Peter Sumich and Tony Modra featured.

Throwbacks is the third AFL Mint series of 2023, succeeding the Relentless series collaboration with the 2022 Premiership victor, Geelong Football Club.

Its maiden series, Ripper Skippers, gained rapid traction, selling out within a 12-hour period in August 2022 and the initial five Mint Moments of the 2023 season sold out in a record two hours.

“We are really excited to deliver this first archive drop from past decades,” Be. CEO Jordan Fogarty said.

“As a fan-focused organisation, we want to recognise and appeal to the wider AFL audience who love and idolise those iconic and spectacular players and moments of play from the 90s.

“It will be nostalgic and a lot of fun for our community to take this trip down memory lane with us.”

Genesis ball perks

Those who purchase Throwbacks packs may have a chance to receive the Genesis ball, a limited AFL Mint utility asset – 1,000 of the available 2,022 Genesis balls have already been claimed.

Genesis ball holders may be eligible for rewards such as premium tickets to the 2023 Toyota AFL Premiership Season, hospitality packages, merchandise discounts, exclusive AMAs, Kayo subscriptions, merchandise giveaways, and an invitation to the inaugural AFL Mint Zone event on 18 June at Marvel Stadium.

AFL Mint's new peer-to-peer marketplace launched in May this year.

In under a month, it saw over 10,000 listings and achieved a trade volume exceeding A$57,500.

The most expensive sale to date is a Joel Selwood Elite moment from the Relentless series, which fetched over A$2,100.
