Investing.com - As the development of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) solutions like ChatGPT continues at a rapid pace, regulators are left trying to keep up by using existing laws to govern the technology's potential impact on society and businesses. The European Union is leading the charge in creating new regulations specifically designed for AI, addressing privacy and safety concerns brought forth by generative technologies such as OpenAI's ChatGPT.

However, it will be years before these new rules can be enforced. In the meantime, governments must resort to applying current legislation when dealing with issues related to personal data protection or threats to public safety.

European privacy watchdogs formed a task force earlier this year after Italy's regulator Garante accused OpenAI of violating EU data protection rules under GDPR and had its ChatGPT service temporarily taken down. The service resumed after OpenAI implemented age verification measures and allowed European users more control over their information used in training the AI model.

Generative AI models have gained notoriety for inaccuracies or "hallucinations," which could lead to significant consequences if integrated into decision-making processes within banks or government departments. As a result, regulators are focusing on both input data sources and generated content while looking at how existing copyright and data privacy laws can be applied.

In addition to clarifying their mandates concerning algorithmic discrimination investigations, agencies across Europe and the United States are also considering how copyrighted materials may factor into legal challenges against companies like OpenAI that use them in training their models.

Meanwhile, French data regulator CNIL has started exploring creative applications of current laws regarding AI technology usage as they continue working alongside other regulatory bodies worldwide. This collaboration aims at finding ways that balance consumer protections with business growth opportunities without stifling innovation.

Ultimately, engaging corporate leaders and experts in the development of AI regulations will be crucial to strike this balance, ensuring that both consumer protection and business growth can coexist harmoniously as artificial intelligence continues to evolve.
