July 16 (Reuters) - Rio Tinto Ltd RIO.AX :

* Rio Tinto releases strong second quarter production results RIO.AX

* Q2 global iron ore shipments (100 percent basis) 81.4 mt versus 75.7 mt reported last year

* Q2 global iron ore production (100 percent basis) 79.7 mt versus 73.1 mt a year ago

* Says "due to the weather disruption in the first half of the year, anticipated shipments were reduced by around seven million tonnes"

* Says Q2 mined copper production (Rio Tinto share) 134.3 kt versus 164.8 kt a year ago

* Says Rio Tinto now expects 2015 iron ore global shipments of 340 million tonnes (100 per cent basis) from its operations in Australia and Canada

* Says in pilbara, around seven million tonnes of shipping capacity was lost directly at the ports due to uncharacteristically severe weather through H1

* In 2015 co expects share of mined copper production to be between 500 and 535 thousand tonnes

* In 2015, expects refined copper production to be between 190 and 220 thousand tonnes

* In 2015, share of production is expected to be 18 to 19 million tonnes of thermal coal

* Q2 aluminium production from tiwai point smelter in New Zealand 83,000 tonnes versus 82,000 tonnes last year

* In 2015, co expects share of production to be 3.0 to 3.4 million tonnes of semi-soft coking coal and 7.1 to 8.1 million tonnes of hard coking coal

* Q2 aluminium production from tiwai point smelter in New Zealand (Rio Tinto share of production) 65,000 tonnes versus 66,000 tonnes last year

* For oyu tolgoi, copper production in the second half of 2015 is expected to be higher than the first half

* Says "first half and second quarter aluminium production was in line with the same periods of 2014"

* For 2015 Rio tinto's expected share of production remains unchanged at 43 million tonnes of bauxite, eight million tonnes alumina and 3.3 million tonnes aluminium
