April 17 (Reuters) - Australia's Whitehaven Coal WHC.AX said on Tuesday its production of saleable coal rose 3 percent in the March quarter, but its run-of-mine coal production was 11 pct lower at one of its main mines because of mechanical problems.
Saleable coal production for the quarter came in at 5.2 million tonnes, up from 5.1 million tonnes produced a year ago, the miner said in its quarterly report.
Whitehaven, which produces both thermal and metallurgical coal from three mines in New South Wales state, said it sold 5.4 million tonnes of coal in the quarter, above the 4.9 million tonnes last year.
