SYDNEY, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Australian ports in Western Australia used to ship hundreds of millions of tonnes of iron ore annually were being cleared of vessels on Friday due to an approaching cyclone, according to the authority that manages the area's ports.
The Pilbara Ports Authority said in a statement it had already cleared vessels from outer anchorages at Port Hedland, and vessels within the inner harbour would depart by 0500 GMT.
The nearby ports of Ashburton and Dampier were expected to be cleared of vessels by 0600 GMT, the authority said.
At 0230 GMT a tropical low was currently located 260 kilometres (160 miles) north-northeast of Port Hedland and was likely to reach tropical cyclone intensity late on Friday or Saturday, according to forecasters.
