Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Financials and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.43% to hit a new 52-week low, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.21%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.25%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which rose 1.76% or 2.57 points to trade at 148.89 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) added 0.92% or 0.40 points to end at 43.79 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.79% or 2.11 points to 268.69 in late trade.
Biggest losers included McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which lost 2.90% or 7.06 points to trade at 236.70 in late trade. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) declined 2.75% or 3.73 points to end at 131.98 and Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) shed 2.57% or 1.49 points to 56.38.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which rose 6.10% to 95.87, The Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which was up 4.15% to settle at 48.44 and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which gained 3.91% to close at 45.76.
The worst performers were Digital Realty Trust Inc (NYSE:DLR) which was down 3.98% to 97.73 in late trade, Organon & Co (NYSE:OGN) which lost 3.54% to settle at 24.26 and Global Payments Inc (NYSE:GPN) which was down 3.42% to 107.99 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Avenue Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ATXI) which rose 106.25% to 7.26, Scienjoy Holding Corp (NASDAQ:SJ) which was up 47.90% to settle at 2.47 and X4 Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:XFOR) which gained 40.18% to close at 1.25.
The worst performers were NLS Pharmaceutics AG (NASDAQ:NLSP) which was down 25.07% to 0.72 in late trade, Midatech Pharma PLC ADR (NASDAQ:MTP) which lost 20.77% to settle at 2.06 and Fednat Holding Co (NASDAQ:FNHC) which was down 18.22% to 0.18 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1638 to 1520 and 147 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2050 rose and 1749 declined, while 296 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.05% to 32.60 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.19% or 3.15 to $1,636.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 2.31% or 1.77 to hit $78.48 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 2.35% or 1.95 to trade at $84.81 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.14% to 0.96, while USD/JPY rose 0.05% to 144.82.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.09% at 114.12.
