Investing.com – Brazil equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Financials and Public Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Sao Paulo, the Bovespa gained 1.90% to hit a new 3-year high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Bovespa were Usinas Siderurgicas de Minas Gerais (SA:USIM5), which rose 8.30% or 0.40 points to trade at 5.22 at the close. Qualicorp SA (SA:QUAL3) added 5.57% or 1.10 points to end at 20.85 and Bradespar SA (SA:BRAP4) was up 5.19% or 1.08 points to 21.88 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Kroton Educacional SA (SA:KROT3), which lost 4.44% or 0.63 points to trade at 13.55 in late trade. Estacio Participacoes SA (SA:ESTC3) declined 2.85% or 0.47 points to end at 16.05 and JBS SA (SA:JBSS3) shed 1.16% or 0.14 points to 11.94.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 219 to 171 and 25 ended unchanged on the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Brazil Etf Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Bovespa options, was down 0.91% to 29.30 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was up 0.89% or 10.70 to $1215.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.75% or 0.40 to hit $52.82 a barrel, while the March US coffee C contract rose 0.95% or 1.45 to trade at $154.68 .
USD/BRL was down 0.23% to 3.1641, while EUR/BRL rose 0.27% to 3.4006.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.64% at 100.13.
