Investing.com - In a recent development, a Chinese state-supported newspaper has expressed strong disapproval of the visit by a high-ranking official from the U.S. State Department to China. The publication claims that the primary objective behind this visit is for Washington to depict itself as being interested in fostering communication while casting blame on Beijing for any lack thereof.
According to experts cited by Global Times, the United States has been attempting to project an image of responsibility by conveying its desire for open communication with China. Simultaneously, it tries to assign fault to China when such efforts fail or are refused outright. This criticism comes alongside Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink's arrival in Beijing - a visit aimed at discussing "key issues in the bilateral relationship" between both superpowers.
The diplomatic relations between these two nations have reached new lows since U.S. State Secretary Antony Blinken canceled his planned trip to China earlier this year following reports of an alleged Chinese spy balloon entering American airspace. Compounding tensions are ongoing disputes over subjects like Taiwan and military activities within the South China Sea region.
During a security summit held recently in Singapore, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed concerns about how Beijing's unwillingness towards dialogue hinders endeavors directed at preserving peace within Asia-Pacific territories. Notably absent from this summit was Li Shangfu –-China’s Defense Minister who has faced sanctions imposed by America since 2018 due to purchasing combat aircraft and equipment sourced from Russia.
As per Global Times' assessment, some experts remain skeptical about whether positive developments can arise from bilateral ties before upcoming presidential elections stateside take place. In addition, they argue that despite seeking dialogue with their counterparts across borders, the United States continues to engage in provocative acts. The same experts also highlight a lack of positive statements from America concerning core interests or bilateral relations.
Regarding Kritenbrink's visit, it is unlikely that any significant breakthroughs will emerge as a result. Instead, the trip should be considered an example of engagement at the working level between both nations.
