Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Energy, Financials and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 2.13% to hit a new 52-week low.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Detour Gold Corporation (TO:DGC), which rose 6.00% or 0.92 points to trade at 16.25 at the close. Meanwhile, Barrick Gold Corporation (TO:ABX) added 5.41% or 0.59 points to end at 11.49 and Canadian Apartment Properties REIT (TO:CAR_u) was up 4.69% or 1.24 points to 27.68 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were TransAlta Corp (TO:TA), which fell 13.76% or 0.60 points to trade at 3.76 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) declined 12.59% or 0.34 points to end at 2.36 and Performance Sports Group Ltd (TO:PSG) was down 11.61% or 1.29 points to 9.82.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 971 to 387 and 188 ended unchanged.
Shares in TransAlta Corp (TO:TA) fell to all time lows; falling 13.76% or 0.60 to 3.76. Shares in Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) fell to all time lows; falling 12.59% or 0.34 to 2.36. Shares in Performance Sports Group Ltd (TO:PSG) fell to 3-years lows; falling 11.61% or 1.29 to 9.82.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 19.33% to 27.60 a new 3-months high.
Gold for February delivery was up 1.46% or 15.70 to $1089.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 4.79% or 1.50 to hit $29.70 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 5.39% or 1.67 to trade at $29.21 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 1.09% to 0.6883, while CAD/EUR fell 1.51% to 0.6307.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.11% at 99.00.
