Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Healthcare and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.07% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.57%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.63%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 3.89% or 4.24 points to trade at 113.26 at the close. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) added 3.25% or 9.37 points to end at 297.39 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 3.13% or 1.18 points to 38.88 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 4.88% or 2.45 points to trade at 47.80 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 3.58% or 6.89 points to end at 185.64 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 3.40% or 8.87 points to 251.79.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which rose 13.12% to 112.50, Viatris Inc (NASDAQ:VTRS) which was up 5.17% to settle at 11.39 and Las Vegas Sands Corp (NYSE:LVS) which gained 4.29% to close at 51.32.
The worst performers were Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which was down 8.58% to 18.32 in late trade, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which lost 7.20% to settle at 120.17 and Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was down 6.69% to 17.30 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Longboard Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:LBPH) which rose 316.25% to 25.10, Akso Health Group DRC (NASDAQ:AHG) which was up 61.20% to settle at 1.13 and Dogness International Corp Class A (NASDAQ:DOGZ) which gained 54.73% to close at 8.17.
The worst performers were Anavex Life Sciences Corp (NASDAQ:AVXL) which was down 35.07% to 6.04 in late trade, China SXT Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SXTC) which lost 33.50% to settle at 2.64 and MOBIX LABS, INC (NASDAQ:MOBX) which was down 32.84% to 2.70 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1550 to 1345 and 59 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1847 fell and 1597 advanced, while 87 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.02% to 13.20.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.21% or 4.35 to $2,067.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 1.45% or 1.04 to hit $70.61 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 1.26% or 0.97 to trade at $76.07 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.95% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.78% to 141.98.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.89% at 101.93.
