Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Utilities and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.04%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.01%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.25%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 1.32% or 2.19 points to trade at 167.59 at the close. Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) added 1.20% or 0.64 points to end at 54.07 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) was up 1.08% or 0.54 points to 50.73 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which lost 1.60% or 5.03 points to trade at 309.36 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 1.37% or 0.50 points to end at 36.06 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) shed 0.91% or 1.44 points to 156.09.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were VF Corporation (NYSE:VFC) which rose 13.96% to 18.45, U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB) which was up 6.96% to settle at 34.89 and Etsy Inc (NASDAQ:ETSY) which gained 5.40% to close at 70.06.
The worst performers were DXC Technology Co (NYSE:DXC) which was down 6.11% to 20.89 in late trade, Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which lost 6.10% to settle at 86.33 and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was down 4.68% to 439.38 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Scisparc Ltd (NASDAQ:SPRC) which rose 122.97% to 6.31, Nkarta Inc (NASDAQ:NKTX) which was up 112.16% to settle at 3.14 and Assembly Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:ASMB) which gained 72.18% to close at 1.25.
The worst performers were Evelo Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:EVLO) which was down 58.76% to 1.20 in late trade, Volcon Inc (NASDAQ:VLCN) which lost 36.27% to settle at 1.30 and BIO-Key International Inc (NASDAQ:BKYI) which was down 34.36% to 0.34 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1787 to 1103 and 96 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2074 rose and 1349 declined, while 157 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.89% to 17.88.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.04% or 0.85 to $1,935.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.79% or 0.67 to hit $85.93 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.81% or 0.73 to trade at $90.38 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.15% to 1.06, while USD/JPY rose 0.19% to 149.79.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.03% at 106.00.
