Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.76% to hit a new 3-month low, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.18%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.76%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which rose 4.87% or 6.68 points to trade at 143.76 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 2.32% or 0.78 points to end at 34.47 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 1.85% or 1.92 points to 105.55 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which lost 3.75% or 12.78 points to trade at 327.89 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 3.40% or 3.52 points to end at 100.02 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 2.45% or 4.20 points to 166.90.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Willis Towers Watson PLC (NASDAQ:WTW) which rose 10.27% to 229.08, American Tower Corp (NYSE:AMT) which was up 8.11% to settle at 175.06 and Masco Corporation (NYSE:MAS) which gained 6.62% to close at 51.53.
The worst performers were Align Technology Inc (NASDAQ:ALGN) which was down 24.88% to 190.56 in late trade, Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE:WHR) which lost 15.83% to settle at 105.73 and Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) which was down 11.65% to 48.37 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ABVC Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:ABVC) which rose 50.59% to 1.28, Forbion European Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:FRBN) which was up 48.63% to settle at 17.85 and Nextplay Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:NXTP) which gained 43.76% to close at 0.66.
The worst performers were Bit Brother Ltd (NASDAQ:BETS) which was down 78.94% to 0.10 in late trade, Sight Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:SGHT) which lost 64.27% to settle at 1.29 and Sonoma Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SNOA) which was down 49.84% to 0.19 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1528 to 1377 and 91 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1820 fell and 1657 advanced, while 115 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.43% to 20.68.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.04% or 0.75 to $1,995.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 2.08% or 1.78 to hit $83.61 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 1.95% or 1.76 to trade at $88.37 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.01% to 1.06, while USD/JPY rose 0.11% to 150.37.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.08% at 106.44.
