Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Consumer Goods and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.18%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.42%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.19%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which rose 1.84% or 2.94 points to trade at 162.92 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 1.30% or 2.00 points to end at 155.41 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was up 1.27% or 3.26 points to 260.06 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM), which lost 3.96% or 7.51 points to trade at 182.24 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 3.41% or 3.89 points to end at 110.11 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shed 2.43% or 0.86 points to 34.52.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Nielsen Holdings PLC (NYSE:NLSN) which rose 21.18% to 27.52, Principal Financial Group Inc (NASDAQ:PFG) which was up 7.12% to settle at 73.69 and News Corp B (NASDAQ:NWS) which gained 5.46% to close at 18.54.
The worst performers were Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which was down 10.86% to 12.06 in late trade, Lam Research Corp (NASDAQ:LRCX) which lost 7.88% to settle at 469.40 and Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:AMAT) which was down 7.58% to 99.66 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Aeroclean Technologies LLC (NASDAQ:AERC) which rose 60.13% to 7.27, BBQ Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:BBQ) which was up 46.46% to settle at 17.18 and Verona Pharma PLC ADR (NASDAQ:VRNA) which gained 44.32% to close at 10.03.
The worst performers were Magic Empire Global Ltd (NASDAQ:MEGL) which was down 89.47% to 12.32 in late trade, CorMedix Inc (NASDAQ:CRMD) which lost 57.45% to settle at 3.20 and Quanterix Corp (NASDAQ:QTRX) which was down 54.76% to 7.46 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1973 to 1144 and 193 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2644 fell and 1121 advanced, while 282 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.25% to 21.77.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.35% or 6.25 to $1,811.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.13% or 0.12 to hit $90.64 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.19% or 0.18 to trade at $96.47 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.18% to 1.02, while USD/JPY rose 0.09% to 135.13.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.14% at 106.18.
