Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.03%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.13%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.12%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 1.88% or 1.49 points to trade at 80.81 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 1.40% or 1.43 points to end at 103.60 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was up 1.04% or 1.62 points to 157.14 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO), which lost 4.83% or 2.66 points to trade at 52.38 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 2.45% or 1.25 points to end at 49.86 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 1.60% or 4.23 points to 260.80.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Lamb Weston Holdings Inc (NYSE:LW) which rose 8.02% to 97.75, MarketAxess Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MKTX) which was up 5.82% to settle at 225.69 and DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) which gained 4.12% to close at 5.18.
The worst performers were Molson Coors Brewing Co Class B (NYSE:TAP) which was down 6.30% to 59.06 in late trade, Mondelez International Inc (NASDAQ:MDLZ) which lost 5.26% to settle at 65.07 and Clorox Co (NYSE:CLX) which was down 5.23% to 124.93 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Orchard Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:ORTX) which rose 95.95% to 15.95, Mirati Therapeutics (NASDAQ:MRTX) which was up 45.44% to settle at 62.38 and SP Plus Corp (NASDAQ:SP) which gained 44.65% to close at 51.22.
The worst performers were VS Media Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:VSME) which was down 51.18% to 2.27 in late trade, Gaucho Group Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:VINO) which lost 39.82% to settle at 1.33 and Cambium Networks Corp (NASDAQ:CMBM) which was down 36.24% to 5.05 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1549 to 1363 and 87 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1726 fell and 1718 advanced, while 145 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.48% to 18.49.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.06% or 1.10 to $1,833.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 2.13% or 1.79 to hit $82.43 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 1.95% or 1.67 to trade at $84.14 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.45% to 1.05, while USD/JPY fell 0.43% to 148.49.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.41% at 106.09.
