Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Industrials, Consumer Services and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.06%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.16%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 0.96% or 1.58 points to trade at 165.59 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 0.88% or 0.43 points to end at 49.18 and Visa Inc (NYSE:V) was up 0.55% or 0.49 points to 89.36 in late trade.
Biggest losers included E I du Pont de Nemours & Co (NYSE:DD), which lost 0.82% or 0.66 points to trade at 79.67 in late trade. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) declined 0.66% or 0.52 points to end at 78.59 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) shed 0.65% or 0.22 points to 33.58.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:INCY) which rose 3.63% to 138.52, Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which was up 2.82% to settle at 33.89 and Cigna Corporation (NYSE:CI) which gained 1.98% to close at 149.39.
The worst performers were CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which was down 4.31% to 56.67 in late trade, Frontier Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:FTR) which lost 4.21% to settle at 2.05 and O'Reilly Automotive Inc (NASDAQ:ORLY) which was down 4.13% to 258.69 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:CYCC) which rose 87.72% to 6.4200, Novocure Ltd (NASDAQ:NVCR) which was up 37.04% to settle at 11.10 and Steadymed Ltd (NASDAQ:STDY) which gained 29.31% to close at 7.500.
The worst performers were DryShips Inc (NASDAQ:DRYS) which was down 18.79% to 1.34 in late trade, Orexigen Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:OREX) which lost 17.73% to settle at 2.830 and Ekso Bionics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:EKSO) which was down 17.07% to 3.40 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1833 to 1382 and 31 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1843 fell and 676 advanced, while 97 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.08% to 12.38.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.28% or 3.45 to $1254.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.73% or 0.37 to hit $50.23 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.80% or 0.43 to trade at $53.10 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.15% to 1.0671, while USD/JPY fell 0.44% to 110.91.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.06% at 100.36.
