Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Consumer Staples, IT and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.64%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB), which rose 6.36% or 0.30 points to trade at 5.02 at the close. Allied Properties REIT (TSX:AP_u) added 4.40% or 0.69 points to end at 16.38 and EQB Inc (TSX:EQB) was up 3.71% or 2.47 points to 68.99 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM), which lost 28.47% or 7.96 points to trade at 20.00 in late trade. Orla Mining Ltd (TSX:OLA) declined 11.39% or 0.55 points to end at 4.28 and Franco-Nevada Corporation (TSX:FNV) shed 8.49% or 16.19 points to 174.47.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 532 to 451 and 98 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.14% to 18.71 a new 6-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.35% or 6.95 to $2,005.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 3.54% or 3.03 to hit $82.51 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 2.96% or 2.64 to trade at $86.56 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.28% to 0.72, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.18% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.40% at 105.95.
