Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Consumer Staples, Utilities and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.14%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were NexGen Energy Ltd. (TSX:NXE), which rose 2.66% or 0.24 points to trade at 9.27 at the close. Denison Mines Corp (TSX:DML) added 2.65% or 0.06 points to end at 2.32 and Cargojet Inc (TSX:CJT) was up 2.36% or 2.75 points to 119.17 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Tilray Inc (TSX:TLRY), which lost 3.47% or 0.11 points to trade at 3.06 in late trade. OceanaGold Corporation (TSX:OGC) declined 3.42% or 0.09 points to end at 2.54 and Lithium Americas Corp (TSX:LAAC) shed 2.68% or 0.23 points to 8.35.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 588 to 374 and 103 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.13% to 10.74.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.53% or 11.05 to $2,072.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 0.70% or 0.50 to hit $71.27 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.10% or 0.08 to trade at $77.07 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.19% to 0.75, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.06% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.14% at 101.06.
