Astro Resources kicks off key infill drilling at Governor Broome Heavy Mineral Sands Project in WA

Astro Resources NL (ASX:ARO)’s development studies for the 100%-owned Governor Broome Mineral Sands Project in the southwest of WA are tracking along well as it kicks off what it calls a ‘pivotal’ infill drilling program.

Scoping study ahead

The infill drilling, consisting of around 550 aircore holes over 6,000 metres, will support an upcoming scoping study and there are hopes it will upgrade the inferred resource portions of the Jack Track deposits and move them to the indicated category.

An upgraded mineral resource will serve as a precursor to the scoping study, which is scheduled for the second half of 2023, and provide a clear pathway to unlocking the value of the Governor Broome Project.

The drilling is expected to be completed by the end of April, after which resource estimations will be worked out from assay results.

"An important step"

Astro executive chairman Tony Leibowitz said: “The commencement of infill drilling represents an important step in advancing the Governor Broome Project towards a scoping study later this calendar year.

“Because of its exceptional location in the mineral sands ‘heartland’ of south-western Western Australia, the size and the quality of the deposits and its attractive mineralogy, Governor Broome is a high-quality opportunity for our shareholders.

“The completion of a scoping study will give investors an insight into the economic significance of the Governor Broome Project and provide us with a clear pathway to unlocking this value for our shareholders.”

Governor Broome Project

The Governor Broome Project benefits from close infrastructure and solid access. It’s some 95 kilometres by sealed road south of Busselton, 105 kilometres south of Iluka’s processing plant at Capel and 135 kilometres from Bunbury Port and from Picton, where Doral has a heavy mineral separation plant.

The project has access to a 132-kilovolt power line just 5 kilometres to the north, as well as a three-phase power line, which passes through the project.

Jack Track deposits

Discovered in 2014, the Jack Track deposits were part of a joint venture between Astro and Iluka Resources Ltd (ASX:ILU) until Astro acquired the remaining 80% of the project in October 2021.

The deposits have seen a substantial investment in exploration including drilling, resource estimation, heavy mineral separation and mineral assemblage test-work.

Test-work results announced in November 2022 revealed 96.5% valuable heavy minerals, including 10.5% zircon and 85.5% titanium minerals, with the primary Ilmenite containing 58% titanium dioxide.
