Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Healthcare, IT and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.40% to hit a new 6-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Concordia Healthcare (TO:CXR), which rose 6.30% or 2.54 points to trade at 42.86 at the close. Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc (TO:VRX) added 6.28% or 2.19 points to end at 37.08 and Intertain Group (TO:IT) was up 5.73% or 0.69 points to 12.74 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Bonavista Energy Corp (TO:BNP), which lost 7.20% or 0.26 points to trade at 3.35 in late trade. Torex Gold Resources Inc . (TO:TXG) declined 7.11% or 0.140 points to end at 1.830 and Silver Standard Resources Inc . (TO:SSO) shed 6.28% or 0.76 points to 11.35.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 690 to 451 and 139 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.32% to 12.54.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 0.74% or 9.00 to $1211.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.10% or 0.05 to hit $49.53 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.28% or 0.14 to trade at $49.45 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.36% to 0.7677, while CAD/EUR rose 0.32% to 0.6908.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.62% at 95.73.
