Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.61%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.68%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.82%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which rose 0.85% or 1.03 points to trade at 122.27 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 0.78% or 0.66 points to end at 85.44 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was up 0.69% or 0.31 points to 45.43 in late trade.
Biggest losers included JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which lost 2.79% or 1.71 points to trade at 59.55 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 2.71% or 2.07 points to end at 74.38 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 2.56% or 3.80 points to 144.45.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Danaher Corporation (NYSE:DHR) which rose 3.67% to 80.40, Extra Space Storage Inc (NYSE:EXR) which was up 2.87% to settle at 93.25 and Realty Income Corporation (NYSE:O) which gained 2.63% to close at 71.47.
The worst performers were Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) which was down 10.84% to 48.37 in late trade, Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which lost 10.38% to settle at 11.66 and Murphy Oil Corporation (NYSE:MUR) which was down 7.81% to 30.09 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Bind Therap (NASDAQ:BIND) which rose 78.39% to 0.710, Lightbridge Corporation (NASDAQ:LTBR) which was up 35.00% to settle at 0.6750 and SemiLEDS Corporation (NASDAQ:LEDS) which gained 39.80% to close at 2.8100.
The worst performers were Epirus Biopharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:EPRS) which was down 47.72% to 0.241 in late trade, XBiotech Inc (NASDAQ:XBIT) which lost 32.53% to settle at 16.80 and Amedica Corp (NASDAQ:AMDA) which was down 30.90% to 0.919 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2391 to 909 and 18 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1877 fell and 702 advanced, while 50 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.62% to 15.60.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 1.47% or 19.75 to $1358.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 4.41% or 2.16 to hit $46.83 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 3.83% or 1.92 to trade at $48.18 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.72% to 1.1074, while USD/JPY fell 0.82% to 101.74.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.69% at 96.27.
