Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Materials, IT and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.27%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Amaya Inc (TO:AYA), which rose 12.76% or 1.89 points to trade at 16.70 at the close. Kinross Gold Corporation (TO:K) added 10.53% or 0.42 points to end at 4.41 and Torex Gold Resources Inc . (TO:TXG) was up 8.64% or 0.140 points to 1.760 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Concordia Healthcare (TO:CXR), which lost 9.06% or 3.00 points to trade at 30.10 in late trade. Manulife Financial Corporation (TO:MFC) declined 3.11% or 0.58 points to end at 18.09 and Freehold Royalties Ltd . (TO:FRU) shed 2.63% or 0.28 points to 10.38.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 690 to 563 and 320 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.93% to 19.18.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 1.83% or 22.40 to $1244.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 2.61% or 1.03 to hit $38.36 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 2.25% or 0.92 to trade at $39.95 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.90% to 0.7651, while CAD/EUR rose 0.03% to 0.6776.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.86% at 95.16.
