Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Industrials and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.23%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.28%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.33%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM), which rose 1.36% or 1.09 points to trade at 81.21 at the close. Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) added 0.95% or 0.98 points to end at 104.17 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was up 0.81% or 1.45 points to 180.82 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT), which lost 1.66% or 1.33 points to trade at 78.93 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 1.16% or 2.20 points to end at 186.75 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) shed 1.08% or 1.35 points to 124.03.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which rose 5.56% to 6.08, Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which was up 4.76% to settle at 35.40 and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which gained 3.77% to close at 11.85.
The worst performers were Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which was down 8.21% to 21.90 in late trade, Kohl’s Corporation (NYSE:KSS) which lost 5.78% to settle at 35.73 and Fastenal Company (NASDAQ:FAST) which was down 5.71% to 42.10 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Wins Finance Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:WINS) which rose 107.16% to 81.00, One Horizon Group Inc (NASDAQ:OHGI) which was up 69.12% to settle at 1.1500 and LiNiu Technology Group (NASDAQ:LINU) which gained 39.98% to close at 0.480.
The worst performers were ESSA Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:EPIX) which was down 36.31% to 1.000 in late trade, Crossroads Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CRDS) which lost 28.34% to settle at 2.2500 and CTi Biopharma Corp (NASDAQ:CTIC) which was down 20.15% to 3.250 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1741 to 1500 and 26 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1555 fell and 957 advanced, while 122 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.37% to 10.51.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.05% or 13.53 to $1296.23 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 2.07% or 0.98 to hit $48.38 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 1.64% or 0.81 to trade at $50.28 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.16% to 1.1273, while USD/JPY fell 0.92% to 109.45.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.25% at 96.53.
