Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.03%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.00%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.03%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 2.71% or 4.04 points to trade at 153.00 at the close. Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) added 1.06% or 0.87 points to end at 82.89 and Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) was up 0.84% or 0.89 points to 106.68 in late trade.
Biggest losers included E I du Pont de Nemours & Co (NYSE:DD), which lost 1.08% or 0.88 points to trade at 80.26 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 0.81% or 0.30 points to end at 36.52 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 0.81% or 1.84 points to 225.03.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Newell Brands Inc (NYSE:NWL) which rose 11.94% to 51.93, CenturyLink Inc (NYSE:CTL) which was up 5.08% to settle at 24.80 and Coach Inc (NYSE:COH) which gained 4.81% to close at 44.71.
The worst performers were Tyson Foods Inc (NYSE:TSN) which was down 6.08% to 59.48 in late trade, LyondellBasell Industries NV (NYSE:LYB) which lost 4.02% to settle at 80.78 and Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:INCY) which was down 3.77% to 117.79 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Inpixon (NASDAQ:INPX) which rose 148.04% to 4.4400, Bridgford Foods Corporation (NASDAQ:BRID) which was up 32.74% to settle at 16.50 and MannKind Corp (NASDAQ:MNKD) which gained 27.95% to close at 1.020.
The worst performers were Amyris Inc (NASDAQ:AMRS) which was down 37.63% to 0.336 in late trade, Horizon Pharma PLC (NASDAQ:HZNP) which lost 35.04% to settle at 10.12 and Terravia Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:TVIA) which was down 23.89% to 0.310 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1747 to 1440 and 43 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1382 fell and 1148 advanced, while 89 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 7.47% to 9.78 a new all time low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.04% or 0.44 to $1227.34 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.58% or 0.27 to hit $46.49 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.65% or 0.32 to trade at $49.42 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.62% to 1.0930, while USD/JPY rose 0.47% to 113.25.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.58% at 98.99.
