Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Monday, as gains in the Energy, Consumer Staples and IT sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 1.85%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pengrowth Energy Corporation (TO:PGF), which rose 18.18% or 0.20 points to trade at 1.30 at the close. Meanwhile, Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) added 17.33% or 0.91 points to end at 6.16 and Sierra Wireless Inc . (TO:SW) was up 16.77% or 3.17 points to 22.07 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Aimia Inc (TO:AIM), which fell 5.08% or 0.49 points to trade at 9.16 at the close. Dream Office Real Estate Investment Trust (TO:D_u) declined 4.69% or 0.90 points to end at 18.30 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) was down 4.60% or 0.24 points to 4.98.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 719 to 617 and 188 ended unchanged.
Shares in Aimia Inc (TO:AIM) fell to 5-year lows; falling 5.08% or 0.49 to 9.16. Shares in Dream Office Real Estate Investment Trust (TO:D_u) fell to 5-year lows; down 4.69% or 0.90 to 18.30.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 0.37% to 21.53 a new 1-month high.
Gold for December delivery was up 0.08% or 0.90 to $1081.80 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 2.71% or 1.10 to hit $41.84 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.67% or 0.30 to trade at $44.77 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.03% to 0.7502, while CAD/EUR rose 0.79% to 0.7020.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.59% at 99.47.
