Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Healthcare, Technology and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 2.08%, while the S&P 500 index gained 2.22%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 2.37%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 3.21% or 1.08 points to trade at 34.69 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 3.14% or 5.53 points to end at 181.45 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 3.13% or 2.12 points to 69.88 in late trade.
Biggest losers included The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which added 0.65% or 0.68 points to trade at 105.35 in late trade. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 0.79% or 0.37 points to end at 47.45 and Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) gained 0.88% or 0.61 points to 69.77.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Sysco Corporation (NYSE:SYY) which rose 9.76% to 52.73, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:REGN) which was up 7.03% to settle at 365.39 and Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which gained 6.72% to close at 295.62.
The worst performers were Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ALXN) which was down 6.94% to 120.05 in late trade, Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which lost 3.44% to settle at 36.50 and WestRock Co (NYSE:WRK) which was down 2.33% to 45.27 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Blue Nile Inc (NASDAQ:NILE) which rose 33.90% to 40.76, Cogint Inc (NASDAQ:COGT) which was up 30.51% to settle at 3.85 and Hongli Clean Energy Technologies Corp (NASDAQ:CETC) which gained 28.65% to close at 2.4700.
The worst performers were Concordia International Corp (NASDAQ:CXRX) which was down 36.36% to 2.03 in late trade, Spring Bank Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SBPH) which lost 18.06% to settle at 7.85 and Opexa Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:OPXA) which was down 14.94% to 0.570 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2590 to 569 and 81 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1977 rose and 493 declined, while 155 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 16.79% to 18.73.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 1.71% or 22.25 to $1282.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 2.00% or 0.88 to hit $44.95 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 1.54% or 0.70 to trade at $46.28 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.87% to 1.1043, while USD/JPY rose 1.35% to 104.48.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.85% at 97.76.
