Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.28%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.53%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.56%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 0.95% or 1.15 points to trade at 121.81 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 0.95% or 0.48 points to end at 51.15 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 0.82% or 1.33 points to 164.47 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Visa Inc (NYSE:V), which lost 1.25% or 1.00 points to trade at 79.13 in late trade. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) declined 1.02% or 0.74 points to end at 72.12 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 0.99% or 0.51 points to 51.01.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Under Armour Inc C (NYSE:UAc) which rose 9.03% to 26.320, Cognizant Technology Solutions (NASDAQ:CTSH) which was up 6.95% to settle at 56.95 and NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which gained 5.57% to close at 11.56.
The worst performers were H&R Block Inc (NYSE:HRB) which was down 9.01% to 21.82 in late trade, Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE:VMC) which lost 5.66% to settle at 124.60 and Pioneer Natural Resources Company (NYSE:PXD) which was down 4.81% to 173.12 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were PhaseRx Inc (NASDAQ:PZRX) which rose 149.56% to 2.82, Sysorex Global (NASDAQ:SYRX) which was up 72.22% to settle at 0.3100 and Prism Technologies Group Inc (NASDAQ:PRZM) which gained 66.67% to close at 0.3500.
The worst performers were Fuwei Films Holdings Co Ltd (NASDAQ:FFHL) which was down 19.44% to 0.5408 in late trade, Skyline Medical Inc (NASDAQ:SKLN) which lost 18.57% to settle at 3.5300 and Towerstream Corp (NASDAQ:TWER) which was down 16.59% to 0.3650 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2055 to 1096 and 91 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1878 fell and 646 advanced, while 120 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.40% to 13.13.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 1.15% or 13.60 to $1192.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 1.78% or 0.82 to hit $46.88 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 1.47% or 0.71 to trade at $48.95 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.19% to 1.0607, while USD/JPY fell 1.02% to 112.07.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.20% at 101.28.
