Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Financials, Clean Technology and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.10%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Semafo Inc . (TO:SMF), which rose 9.55% or 0.42 points to trade at 4.82 at the close. Aimia Inc (TO:AIM) added 8.19% or 0.66 points to end at 8.72 and Torex Gold Resources Inc . (TO:TXG) was up 7.59% or 0.120 points to 1.700 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Pengrowth Energy Corporation (TO:PGF), which lost 9.71% or 0.10 points to trade at 0.93 in late trade. Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb) declined 8.47% or 0.10 points to end at 1.08 and Canadian Energy Services & Technology Corp (TO:CEU) shed 7.38% or 0.24 points to 3.01.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 612 to 609 and 325 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.88% to 24.95.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 0.35% or 4.30 to $1234.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 2.64% or 0.85 to hit $33.00 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 2.03% or 0.70 to trade at $35.11 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 1.18% to 0.7384, while CAD/EUR rose 1.04% to 0.6696.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.11% at 97.40.
