Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.64%, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.12%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.26%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 1.22% or 0.62 points to trade at 51.65 at the close. McDonald`s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) added 1.08% or 1.27 points to end at 118.42 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.99% or 1.24 points to 126.72 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 4.07% or 3.04 points to trade at 71.73 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 2.41% or 3.75 points to end at 151.60 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) shed 2.17% or 1.83 points to 82.63.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Urban Outfitters Inc (NASDAQ:URBN) which rose 16.08% to 32.69, Assurant Inc (NYSE:AIZ) which was up 2.41% to settle at 75.22 and Red Hat Inc (NYSE:RHT) which gained 2.02% to close at 68.28.
The worst performers were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which was down 17.78% to 4.30 in late trade, Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which lost 14.67% to settle at 7.33 and Murphy Oil Corporation (NYSE:MUR) which was down 14.65% to 22.78 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Blue Earth Inc (NASDAQ:BBLU) which rose 65.14% to 0.1189, Town Sports International Holdings (NASDAQ:CLUB) which was up 58.97% to settle at 1.86 and Globus Maritime Ltd (NASDAQ:GLBS) which gained 46.04% to close at 0.1900.
The worst performers were Rex Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:REXX) which was down 39.63% to 1.3100 in late trade, Linn Energy LLC (NASDAQ:LINE) which lost 36.41% to settle at 1.24 and Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc (NASDAQ:EGLE) which was down 33.67% to 1.990 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2517 to 839 and 24 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2038 fell and 566 advanced, while 59 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.92% to 18.55.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 0.17% or 2.10 to $1261.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 4.41% or 1.67 to hit $36.23 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 3.57% or 1.46 to trade at $39.38 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.05% to 1.1008, while USD/JPY fell 0.72% to 112.63.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.07% at 97.19.
