Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Healthcare, Oil & Gas and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.74%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.81%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.71%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (N:CAT), which rose 1.50% or 1.00 points to trade at 67.87 at the close. Visa Inc (N:V) added 0.58% or 0.42 points to end at 73.16 and McDonald`s Corporation (N:MCD) was up 0.47% or 0.55 points to 117.59 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corporation (N:CVX), which lost 1.08% or 0.91 points to trade at 83.44 in late trade. JPMorgan Chase & Co (N:JPM) declined 1.08% or 0.62 points to end at 56.92 and Microsoft Corporation (O:MSFT) shed 0.97% or 0.50 points to 50.80.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were CONSOL Energy Inc (N:CNX) which rose 10.22% to 8.63, Signet Jewelers Ltd (N:SIG) which was up 10.05% to settle at 109.06 and ONEOK Inc (N:OKE) which gained 4.22% to close at 23.96.
The worst performers were Endo International PLC (O:ENDP) which was down 23.41% to 40.55 in late trade, Southwestern Energy Company (N:SWN) which lost 9.33% to settle at 5.78 and Mallinckrodt (N:MNK) which was down 6.03% to 65.02 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Alexza Pharmaceuticals Inc (O:ALXA) which rose 119.79% to 0.6374, API Technologies Corp (O:ATNY) which was up 94.06% to settle at 1.960 and Federal-Mogul Corporation (O:FDML) which gained 45.68% to close at 7.25.
The worst performers were Blue Earth Inc (O:BBLU) which was down 50.60% to 0.1077 in late trade, Skyline Medical Inc (O:SKLN) which lost 41.99% to settle at 0.6143 and Orexigen Therapeutics Inc (O:OREX) which was down 26.08% to 0.717 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1820 to 1440 and 98 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1338 fell and 1303 advanced, while 23 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.63% to 20.53.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was up 1.52% or 18.60 to $1239.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 3.36% or 1.10 to hit $33.88 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 3.44% or 1.22 to trade at $36.66 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.51% to 1.0876, while USD/JPY fell 1.07% to 112.78.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.15% at 98.28.
